The $2,000 Rusty Nail!

It all started with a call late Saturday afternoon. My hairdresser, Anne, to ask if I may be on their feet. Now! It seems that she and her daughter were in a creative mood this yard work, afternoon. They decided to RIP an old deck and a new flower bed. Unfortunately, that old deck had a lot of old rotted wood with rusty nails. Anne was unlucky to promote the use of one of these rusty nails and had it in her foot. Her daughter, removed the board with the nail, but now, only a few hours later, Anne was with the way their mouth looked. She had cleaned the area with peroxide and some ointment on them, but now her foot was red and swollen. Help!

Anne came to my house, so I could at their feet. She was a typical safety stitch wound on the underside of the foot with its redness around the wound, and many of the drainage. It sure looked like it was still a part of the nail, and perhaps even part of the shoe is still in her foot. Infection was in the attitude! From the ER, she went for the X-rays and I planned the operating room to clean the wound.

Your X-rays showed at least 50 small pieces of metal still in her foot. After the operation to clean the wound, spending an hour, the small pieces of rust and metal shavings, but also a piece of the sock and shoe from her foot, Anne’s foot was on the road to recovery. Unfortunately, her purse was $ 2,000 lighter after the payment of their deductible. So much to save by making your own yard work!

What have we learned from Anne’s story? Rents farm workers? No, a better lesson is there, puncture wounds immediately! They are often charged much more than they look.

Bite wounds are very security in the foot. Although they are very common, most people are not adequately treated. Getting proper treatment within 24 hours is important that the reduction of infections lead to serious complications.

Even parts of their own skin, socks and shoes, as well as dirt and leaves may be contaminating a puncture wound. Remember that all safety stitch wounds wounds are dirty, because it is the penetration of the skin with a non-sterile object. Regardless of the foreign body, something that’s still a wound can cause an abscess and cause a serious infection.

Treatment of puncture wounds should be used within 24 hours after the wound and begin with the cleaning of the wound and close monitoring until they are healed. OP-cleaning with removal of foreign bodies is often necessary, in combination with one or two weeks of antibiotics, depending on the contamination of the wound. X-rays can even be necessary to preserve the bone structure for each investment. A bonus is that metallic debris can also use the x-ray. Foreign bodies can often missed in the emergency room for appropriate follow-up with your podiatrist is important. Infection is a frequent complication, so that your doctor will closely your wound until it heals. All changes, swelling, redness or discharge should immediately. In patients with diabetes or poor circulation, a sting, bite can cause an infection so serious that there is an amputation.

Do not delay treatment! Hindsight is always 20/20, but you do not had the desire to include them in the office if they are in hospital with a severe infection. They play with no puncture wounds, consult a doctor immediately!
